Pray these two vital prayers before you open your Bible:

  1. Humility – “Lord, I humbly acknowledge my complete dependence on your Holy Spirit to help me understand and apply Your Word. I humbly submit to Your Word, even the parts that challenge my traditions and presuppositions. I entrust myself to Your empowering grace to mold me into Your image as I renew my mind with Your Truth. Amen!”

  2. Honor – “Lord, may I truly honor, treasure, value, and obey Your Word. May I not treat Your word as just another book, but as the divine revelation that I desperately need to love You and obey You in all things. Amen!”

5 Questions to always Ask when studying the Bible:

  1. What does the text say?

    • list out all your observations

    • pay attention to all the ways the text describes God’s nature and purposes

  2. What does the text mean?

    • What do you think Luke's main point is?

    • Is there a timeless spiritual principle in the text?

  3. What do You (the Lord) want to reveal to me about this passage?

    • take time to pray and ask the Holy Spirit if there is anything He wants to highlight

    • Is there something He wants you to see, hear, and feel about this text?

  4. How can I lovingly respond?

    • take time to pray and listen if the Holy Spirit wants you to practically respond

    • share this with someone you know to help hold you accountable

  5. Who is one person who would be blessed to hear this?

    • ask the Holy Spirit if there is anyone he would like you to share this with

    • let someone who can hold you accountable know and then obey!
